Guidelines for Reviewers

Reviewer Guidance on Ethics, Quality, and Evaluation

Published three times a year, the Güven Journal of Medicine and Health Sciences is a current, peer-reviewed, and open-access e-journal.

The publication languages of the journal are English and Turkish.

The Güven Journal of Medicine and Health Sciences is dedicated to publishing scientific and up-to-date review articles.

The journal is based on independent and impartial double-blind peer-review principles. Only unpublished review articles that are not under consideration for publication elsewhere may be submitted. The Güven Journal of Medicine and Health Sciences does not accept multiple or duplicate submissions, even if a previous publication appeared in a different language. Authors are responsible for the scientific content of their manuscripts. The Güven Journal of Medicine and Health Sciences reserves the right to request any research materials on which the review is based.

The Güven Journal of Medicine and Health Sciences encourages and supports academics, researchers, and experts in publishing valuable research. The main goal of the journal is to publish review articles with high scientific and ethical quality and to set a good example for medical publishing worldwide.

The Editorial Board and Publisher of the Güven Journal of Medicine and Health Sciences adhere to the principles of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), World Association of Medical Editors (WAME), Council of Science Editors (CSE), Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM), World Medical Association (WMA), U.S. Office of Research Integrity (ORI), European Association of Science Editors (EASE), International Society of Managing and Technical Editors (ISMTE), and Open Access Scholarly Publishing Association (OASPA).

All review articles submitted for publication are evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Currency
  • Importance
  • Quality
  • Ethical Nature
  • Suitability for the Journal

The Güven Journal of Medicine and Health Sciences uses a well-structured framework for the evaluation process.

The entire review submission process is completed through an annotated online submission system. Through the same web address, reviewers can access their personal pages using their passwords.

Review articles that comply with the journal's core rules are sent to at least two external reviewers, and their opinions regarding the manuscript's suitability for publication are obtained. The evaluated manuscripts are then reassessed by the Editor-in-Chief and the Editorial Board, and a final decision of acceptance or rejection is made.

If reviewers have any potential conflict of interest, they must inform the editor before agreeing to review the submitted manuscript.

The Güven Journal of Medicine and Health Sciences is committed to the highest standards in research and publication ethics. In cases of ethical misconduct, editors act according to the relevant international publishing rules (i.e., COPE guidelines, ICMJE Recommendations, CSE's White Paper on Publication Ethics, WAME resources, WMA policies, and ORI). The Editorial Board encourages reviewers to report possible research or publication misconduct such as unethical study design, duplication, plagiarism, and similar issues.

Plagiarism is a serious issue and one of the most common ethical problems affecting medical writing. The Güven Journal of Medicine and Health Sciences does not tolerate any form of plagiarism. In line with our journal policy, submitted manuscripts are screened at least twice (during peer review and after acceptance) using plagiarism detection software (iThenticate and others) to identify overlapping and similar texts. If reviewers suspect any issue, editors may provide them with the results obtained from plagiarism screening tools.

During peer review, manuscripts with a similarity rate above 20% are returned to the author with a request to handle citations appropriately, use quotation marks for direct quotations, or rewrite the relevant sections. If the similarity rate is excessively high for revision, the manuscript may be rejected. Text similarity resulting from common terminology and method-related details among manuscripts should not, by itself, be considered a serious ethical concern.

Manuscripts that do not require ethics committee approval are reviewed in accordance with COPE guidelines (Guidance for Editors: Research, Audit and Service Evaluations).

Written consent obtained from the patient must be declared for any reproducible material, including all photographs in which the patient may be identifiable. Authors must clearly state that they comply with internationally accepted guidelines and the guidelines issued by the relevant authority in their country.

The Güven Journal of Medicine and Health Sciences expects its reviewers to act with confidence while evaluating manuscripts. Until publication, manuscript content must not be used or shared in any form. In cases of possible reviewer misconduct, the journal applies the COPE flowcharts. For COPE ethical guidelines that reviewers are expected to follow, please review the documents titled “Core Principles for Reviewers” and “Expectations from Reviewers”.

Our reviewers are expected to check whether manuscripts comply with the SAGER guidelines and to encourage authors in this regard. To avoid confusion between the two terms, authors should use sex (biological trait) and gender identity (shaped by social and cultural conditions) carefully. Article titles and/or abstracts should clearly indicate which sex(es) the study applies to. Authors should also explain in the background whether sex and/or gender identity differences are expected. They should report how sex and/or gender identity were addressed in the study design and, when appropriate, provide disaggregated data by sex and/or gender identity and discuss related findings. If no sex and/or gender identity analysis was performed, the reason should be stated in the discussion.

The Güven Journal of Medicine and Health Sciences uses bibliographic databases to identify new reviewers and also accepts author suggestions. We thank our reviewers for their contributions. In addition, upon request, reviewer certificates are provided by the editors.

In addition to the routine questions on the reviewer comment page, reviewers may also use the following questions while evaluating manuscripts:
